Haiti Dental Mission Trip

On Friday the 20th, Seth, Derrick, and I left for our mission trip to Haiti. Due to the flight schedule, we had to stay a night in Miami (no complaints here). It was my first time in Miami and I loved it. We weren't near the beach, but it was fun anyway. We got to the hotel around 8:30 and we were hungry. We met up with Dr. Suszko (the dentist that started the Haiti trip) and we decided that since we were in Miami we needed to try some Cuban food. The valet guys were nice and instead of hailing us a cab, they offered to drive us in their limo Tahoe. While we were waiting, we also met up with Anna, a resident at Brigham and Women's Hospital who was coming on the trip, also.We ended up at La Rosa Restaurant. We had an awesome waiter, he also is a painter and "temporary tatto artist" on the side. (His motto: Anything on Anything.) I had the La Ropa Viejas for dinner, which means old clothes. It was amazing food and the beers came with frosted glasses. When they see the glass is losing its frostiness, you get a new glass.

We flew into Port au Prince on Saturday morning. We had to go to another terminal to catch our connecting flight to Cap Haitian. We jumped in the back of a pickup truck and took a 5 minute car ride. We went back through security, which seemed like a joke. We don't think the metal detectors or x-ray machines even worked.
We boarded a 15 seat turbo-prop.

We flew low over the mountains to the other side of the island.
The plane would jump around and fish tail every time we went through a cloud.

We landed in Cap Haitian and found dogs and people walking around on the runway. We got picked up by Edy, our translator and driver, and Dr. Charles, a Haitian Dentist. We stayed at the Hotel Du Roi Christoph, the old Governor's mansion. The Hotel was gated and had private security. It had a pool, a couple bars, multiple lounge areas, and good water and food. The local beer is Prestige and of course there is Haitian Rum. The weather was perfect. Not too humid and about 80s during the day and 70s at night.

Shots from around the hotel

Being within and outside the gates was like night and day. Once you walked outside of the gates, it was a whole other world...

Girls Week

While Amit is in Haiti this week doing a dental mission trip, Emma and I are holding down the fort. Amit left at the right time, he gets to enjoy sun and warmth while Emma and I deal with snow and cold. Thankfully, his hotel has wi-fi, so we've been e-mailing back and forth. Here is some of what I've been up to while he's been gone. I apologize for the less than stellar photos, Amit has my camera.

I finally framed our craft day project.
My very own embroidered tree trunk.
I am so excited that it turned out!

Here are some photos of the snow.
Hopefully this snow lasts longer than the rest.
It has been a slushy, rainy winter. :-(

After Christmas, Emma had too many toys for her bucket.
Now they fit... but she still dumps them all out.
Next task - teaching her how to put them back!

We've enjoyed a nice, quiet weekend. Classes start for me this week, so I figured I should enjoy the quiet while I still can. Amit promised to take lots of pictures, so hopefully we'll have some different posts for you next weekend!

Amit the Monster

Don't even ask me how we came up with this, but Amit decided to put our blanket over his head and make noises. Emma was a little freaked out by the whole thing...

Yep, that's Emma sitting right on top of me.
Let's hope she's not traumatized.

I'm so glad I had my camera next to me, so I could get these!

New Year, New Recipes

Wow, it's hard to believe it's January 2012 already! I'm hoping this month goes by quickly, since January 30th is Match Day. We've narrowed our choices to Burlington, VT (the Match) and Bangor, ME (February interview). Yikes!! We're starting to get a little crazy/nervous/excited around here. I've been doing lots of praying for calmness and peace until we know what is happening. I hate the waiting part. I'm too much of a control freak. Oh, and I've been cooking/browsing Pinterest. I figure what better way is there to take my mind off the next few weeks of waiting than by trying some new recipes!

BTW - Mom, make sure you sign onto Pinterest so you can steal these!

It was so good!
Thai Cucumber Salad
It was delicious!

We also got some of our favorites, to take a break from all that cooking.
Not Your Average Joe's Buffalo Chicken Pizza
and a Blueberry Pancake cupcake from Treat.

We also made some energy bites, found here. They're really good, but we'll tweak the recipe a bit next time. So stay tuned for that amazing recipe, among many others!  Hope you aren't salivating too much after reading this... Our menu this week includes enchiladas, more Thai chicken pizza, tacos, and whatever else I can come up with!

Present Highlights

Since we're all grown up and usually give wish lists to my parents for Christmas, we always know the majority of our presents before we open them. Well, the Krueger clan totally kicked butt at Christmas surprises this year!
Krissy found this for Amit's gift.
OMG! We love it!! How awesome is that?
It even comes with his dental book!

Bruce gave us this Christmas sign.
I'm so excited to put it up next year!

Oh, Krissy knows us so well!!
Emma and I can't wait to use our present.

And not to leave Nate out...
This is my view while we use the bike trainer he gave us.
I'm thinking Emma isn't a huge fan of it.
(I love it!)

I feel so productive with my new sewing machine, too.
I made myself a sewing machine cover.
I'm so proud of myself!!

We got some really great gifts this year. Thanks everyone!!!!

Sewing Fiend

Check out what I got for Christmas!!!!!

I love the tons of fun projects and ideas I find on Pinterest and decided that I need to teach myself how to sew. I was so excited to get my new sewing machine, that I had to start some projects right away! I've been dying to make some scarves that I found online, so I managed to fit in a little bit of sewing in between all our crazy plans.
The fabric was ready and waiting for my sewing attempts.

Finished product #1
American Apparel Infinity Scarf Knock-off
You can find the tutorial on Pinterest.

Scarf #2
Now I'm ready to cheer on Michigan at the Sugar Bowl!
Tutorial linked here.

I had so much fun making these two scarves, though I need A LOT more practice. Thank goodness I have tons of Pinspiration to choose from! So stay tuned - I will be attempting many more projects and I promise I'll take pictures of my oops moments.
